St. John's Fabulous Beaches
Our
favorite beaches on St. John in order of distance from "I Delfini"
Rendezvous & Dittlif:
3
minute drive, 10 mi nute easy walk. The 2 car parking area is directly
across from "I Delfini". Small, private beach. Great for snorkeling. We
almost always see turtles. rays, conck and all the usual "tropicals".
Reef Bay:
4
minute drive and a 10 minute walk on a very steep trail. worth the effort!!
The
beach is about 1/2 to 3/4 mile long. you can also walk all the way over
and visit the
Reef
Bay sugar plantation. It's the same one you would see on the Reef Bay hike
given by the National Park Service.
The
tide pools and shallows are very interesting. Too rough for snorkeling.
Secluded.
Solomon Beach:
15
minute drive, 15 minute steep hike. Take drinking water. Locals caonsider
this a "swimsuit optional" beach , although frowned on by the Park Service.
Trail starts down from the Lind Point housing area, just North of Cruz
Bay. Usually quiet in the moring with more people arriving as the day wears
on. Pretty much secluded though.
Hawksnest Beach:
20
minute drive to the other side of the island. Narrow sandy beach. Great
for swimming and snorkeling.
Amenities
include covered picnic area and toilets.
Trunk Bay:
25
minute drive. This is the big tourist draw. It is considered one of the
10 most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Full concessions,
toilets, showers, snack bar. Generally crowded. The Park Service charges
a 4$ admission fee. The beach IS beautiful but too "touristy" for our taste.
There is an underwater snorkel trail which is marginally interesting.
Cinnamon Bay:
30
minute drive. Great beach with campground and restaurant. The Park puts
on shows occassionally at that amphitheater. Check at the Park Service
visitor Center in Cruz Bay for a program of events. Rental of snorkel,
kayak and wind surfing gear.Visit the small Danish history museum.
Leinster Bay & Waterlemon Cay:
45
minute drive. Near Annaberg ruins which is fascinating to visit for information
on the history of the area. This is the place for supreme snorkeling! Leave
your car at the parking area for Annaberg and hike in. Generally not too
crowded. No amenities.
Salt Pond:
45
minute drive to the other side of Coral Bay. 10 minute moderate to easy
walk. Beautiful beach. Picnic area and porta pottty but no other amenities.
Bring drinks and lunch and make a day of it. Swimming and snorkeling that
are hard to beat, even on St. John. Please leave no valuables in your car!!
